There has been a meeting of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Board. It approved the work of the Museum in 2008 and presented the plan for the following year. Financial and budgetary issues dominated the meeting. The Council decided to petition the Ministry of Culture for an increase in the appropriation for the Museum.
For the fourth time, a project on „Auschwitz—My Land: History and Memory 60 Years Later“ has been held. Prizes and Honorable Mention awards for entrants in the essay and photography contest, and for teacher advisers, were handed out at the International Youth Meeting House. There was also a showing of the entries.
Rector Professor Lucjan Suchanek of the State Higher Vocational School (PWSZ) in Oświęcim presented Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Director Dr. Piotr M. A. Cywiński with the letter, written by Auschwitz prisoners, that was recently discovered during the renovation of one of the buildings at the school. Former prisoner Wacław Sobczak, whose name appears in the letter, and who was one of the prisoners who bricked up the bottle in an aircraft shelter they were building on September 20, 1944. The letter contained the names and numbers of seven prisoners working in this labor detail.
