The Auschwitz Museum appreciated by the Portuguese royal dynasty
Director of the Auschwitz-Birkenau State Museum Piotr Cywiński, Ph.D., was honoured with the commandery of the Order of Saint Sebastian and Marianna Ossolińska, Head of the Diplomacy of Remembrance at the Auschwitz Museum and President of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Institute, with a medal awarded to women.
The decorations were awarded by Dom Felipe de Bragança e Bourbon de Mendóça, earl of Rio Grande, governor and administrator of the order.
Among the participants of decoration ceremony which took place at the Wawel castle there were among others Dom Enrique de Villamor, Honorary Consul of the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial in Spain as well as Captain Tomasz Otrębski, President of Tadeusz Kościuszko’s Foundation in Cracow.
The Military Order of Saint Sebastian, also known as the Order of the Arrow, was a Portuguese distinction established by Sebastian I Aviz, King of Portugal, in 1576. The distinction was revived in 1994 as a home order of the constitutional dynastic line of the kingdom of Portugal.
