The Director of the Auschwitz Museum, dr Piotr M.A. Cywiński , was awarded the Officer's Cross of the Greek Order of the Phoenix by the President of Greece, Karolos Papoluias.

The Greek President, Karolos Papoulias, visited the Memorial Site and the Auschwitz Museum in July last year. It was a part of his official visit to Poland.

“Our duty is to remember about the tragedy caused by the Nazi forces. Whoever denies there were victims and the fact of killing those who were held here, does not have the right to belong to the European family”, said President Papoulias. He added that having seen the Museum’s exhibition, he felt ashamed because – as he said – “this place is vivid evidence of the fall of humanity”.

The Order of Phoenix was established in 1926. This is the third most important order in Greece. The name of the order refers to the mythical Phoenix that rises again from ashes every 500 years every time it burns, and symbolises the rebirth of the Hellenic Republic.
