Description

A book, "Ich war eine Nummer...", by Kazimierz Piechowski is a collection of his memoirs and his interviews with former prisoners of Auschwitz.

Kazimierz Piechowski, born in 1919, an engineer and traveler. Escaped from Auschwitz along with his three friends in June 1942. None of four escapees had ever been caught by Germans. In the book he described his two-year imprisonment in and daring escape from Auschwitz. Eugenia Bożena Kaczyńska nee Kłodecka, a former prisoner of Auschwitz and Ravensbrück camps. After the war she dedicated herself to looking after orphaned children. Initially, she did not want to share her memories. She was determined to forget. ”However, with passage of time, I became more and more convinced that to preserve memory of this crime was my moral obligation towards those who had brutally been murdered and those who had suffered and miraculously survived this hell”, she writes in the book. Michał Ziółkowski, born in 1919, a former prisoner of Auschwitz-Birkenau and Flossenbürg/Leitmeritz camps. Graduate of the Higher School of Maritime Trade. Outstanding expert in the field of international trade and transport. Meetings with young Germans in Mainz in 2001 and 2002, inspired him to share his testimonies with a broad audience by including them in the book.
